Everything people ask before downloading.
- Is Protein Tracker free?
- Protein Tracker is free to download and the free tier lets you log one protein entry per day, which is enough to learn what your intake actually looks like. Protein Tracker Pro unlocks unlimited logging, editing past entries, custom foods, AI Meal Scan, and Apple Intelligence food search. Pro is available as a weekly subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase.
- Do I have to count calories too?
- No. Protein Tracker deliberately tracks protein only, which makes logging fast enough that people actually keep doing it. If your goal is to eat more protein, improve satiety, or hold on to muscle, protein alone is sufficient. If you need a specific rate of weight change, calories determine that outcome and a full macro tracker would suit you better.
- How does AI Meal Scan work?
- You photograph a meal and the app returns an estimated protein count, which you review and adjust before logging. It is most useful for restaurant plates and home-cooked mixed dishes that are not in any food database. Treat the result as an estimate rather than a measurement — a photo cannot reveal cooking oil, sauce composition, or an exact portion weight. AI Meal Scan is a Pro feature.
- Is my food data private?
- Your logs stay on your device by default, and the developer reports collecting no data from the app. Apple Intelligence insights run on-device where your hardware supports them. Your food log is health data, and it is treated that way.
- Which devices does Protein Tracker support?
- iPhone and iPad running iOS or iPadOS 18.0 or later, Macs with Apple Silicon running macOS 15.0 or later, and Apple Vision running visionOS 2.0 or later. The app includes Home Screen widgets and is available in English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, and Spanish.
- How much protein should I be aiming for?
- Roughly 1.2 grams per kilogram of body weight for general health, 1.6 g/kg if you do resistance training, and 1.8 to 2.0 g/kg if you are losing fat and want to keep muscle. The app calculates a personalised target from your body weight, activity level, and goal, and you can override it with your own number at any time. You can also work it out first with our protein calculator.
